Therapy & Sports Massage
Therapeutic
Massage is the manipulation of the muscles and tissues of the body to prevent and alleviate pain, discomfort, and
stress. There are many styles and types of massage therapy but at Therapy Tuition we concentrate on offering the following
treatments/courses.
Massage or Swedish Massage is the style
that comes to mind when most people think about a massage treatment. It was developed in Stockholm a couple of centuries ago
and is the most common and best-known form of bodywork performed today. The goal is to relax the entire
body and this is accomplished by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the
heart. Additional techniques include circular pressure applied by the hands and palms, firm kneading, percussion-like tapping,
bending and stretching. Lotion or oil is often used to reduce friction and stimulate the skin. Swedish massage is exceptional
for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility while easing
tension.
Sports Massage is geared toward athletes of every kind from world-class professionals to weekend
joggers. The particulars of the massage are specific to the athlete's sport of choice and are often focused on a particular
troublesome area like a knee or shoulder. Some aspects of massage are gaining popularity as useful components in a balanced
training regimen. Sports massage can be used as a means to enhance pre-event preparation and reduce recovery time for maximum
performance during training/competition or even after an event. Athletes have discovered that specially designed massage
promotes flexibility, removes fatigue, improves endurance, helps prevent injuries and prepares them to compete at their absolute
best.
Sports
Injuries are any injury related to the practice of a sport, often resulting from the overuse and overstretching of muscles,
tendons, and ligaments. Sports injuries can happen as a result of not warming up properly before exercising vigorously, pushing
too hard for your current level of fitness, or using inadequate equipment. Sport injuries can be acute or chronic. Acute
sports injuries occur as a result of a sudden impact or awkward movement, which can result in prolonged absence from training
and competition. Chronic sports injuries develop over time, often due to continual use of the same joints or muscle groups.
Chronic sports injuries can occur due to bad technique or occasionally structural abnormalities, such as an inherited bone
or muscle problem, which can leed to interrupted training or poor competition performance. Some common sports injuries
include sprains, strains, lacerations and bruises, bone fractures, tendonitis (inflammation of a tendon) and head injuries.
